Good character requirement – when renewing spouse visa

last updated 4 May 2024

To meet the good character requirement when renewing your spouse visa, the UKVI (Home Office) require that you meet the ‘good character’ requirements.

It is important to note that the ‘good character’ meaning in the Immigration Rules is much tougher than in other areas of law. Any of the following list can result in the UKVI (Home Office) deciding that you do not meet the ‘good character’ requirements and therefore refusing your visa renewal application:

  • Breaches of the immigration rules – even minor breaches
  • Any criminal convictions including minor driving convictions or Cautions
  • Evidence of deception and dishonesty
  • Involvement in or association with war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, terrorism, or other actions that are not conducive to the public good.
  • Evidence of failure to pay debts or fines

Spouse Visa renewals are not straightforward. Most people assume that because they already have a spouse visa, the renewal will be automatic. Nothing is further from reality. The Immigration Rules are complex and refusals are commonplace. You should seek expert advice & assistance from solicitors specialising in Spouse Visas. Contact Us today.
