English language requirement for Renewing a UK Spouse Visa in 2024

last updated 4 May 2024

There are three different ways of proving that you meet the English language requirement when renewing your spouse visa. These are:

  • If you are from an eligible native English-speaking country; which are only Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA.
  • If you have a degree or other tertiary level academic qualification that was taught in English
  • A Pass grade for an approved English language test.

It is vital to note if you previously passed a CEFR level at A1 level, you will now need to pass an A2 level test in speaking and listening when extending your spouse visa.

We have multiple clients who were refused spouse visa extensions because of issues with their English language evidence. The rules are complex and pass certificates expire or the UKVI (Home Office) finds faults with your language certificate.
