A spouse visa allows an eligible foreign national to join and live with their married partner in the UK. Without a spouse visa, you cannot enter the UK or live in the UK even though you might be married to a UK national.
Marriage includes same sex relationships and civil partnerships. You may even qualify if you are not married but have been in a long term relationship.

Who can apply for a UK spouse visa?
As a foreign national, you can apply for a UK partner or spouse visa as long as your partner meets one of the following criteria and is based in the UK:
- Is a British or Irish citizen
- Has settled in the UK and has Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), permanent residence, or EU Settled Status
- Has refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
- Has a Turkish Businessperson visa or Turkish Worker visa
UK spouse visa requirements 2024
You will need to meet the eligibility requirements:
- You are in a genuine and eligible relationship
- You and your partner’s combined gross annual income is at least £29,000 (the UK Government has said that they intend to raise this to £38,700).
- If you applied before 11 April 2024, you will only need to meet the previous £18,600 income threshold.
- You have suitable accommodation in the UK
- You meet the English language requirement: at least level A1
